After studying Political Science at Birmingham University, Ryan spent the first few years of his working life within the finance sector before entering the world of recruitment where he achieved widespread success both within a niche commercial entity and large global PLC. He has a leading reputation within the local market and has significant experience across all levels of finance recruitment.

RGuy, co-founder of Vitae, has spent all of his working life within recruitment after completing an Industrial Management degree at Nottingham Trent University. Guy has an enviable track record in recruitment building and managing divisions and business units from scratch, and providing strategy for one of the UK’s leading recruitment businesses. You&rsquo;ve worked hard to land the job, but it&rsquo;s not time to relax just yet. You still need to pass your probation period. While this might sound daunting, it&rsquo;s not actually as scary you might think. There are just a few pointers to keep in mind to impress your new employer. Below, we provide some helpful advice on this, so you can prove that you&rsquo;re cut out for the demands of your new role.
<h2>1.Show enthusiasm</h2>
You showed enthusiasm and excitement at the interview and successfully displayed your passion for the role to your new employer. So why stop now? You need to demonstrate that you&rsquo;re enthusiastic to learn new information and are keen to excel in your new job. If you fail to do this your employer might think that you&rsquo;re not that interested in the role after all.
To do this, make sure that you&rsquo;re always keen to take on new tasks and ask questions to show that you&rsquo;re interested in other people and the company. Make sure you look engaged and ready. Don&rsquo;t sit at your desk yawning or looking out of the window.
<h2>2.Conform to the company culture</h2>
Every company has its own unique culture. It&rsquo;s understandable if this is daunting at first, but rest assured that it will soon become familiar. So, if everyone seems to work in silence, don&rsquo;t disturb this by playing music or loudly asking people about their weekend plans. Likewise, if they all go for drinks on a Thursday after work or eat lunch in a certain place, it&rsquo;s good to join in and show that you&rsquo;re part of the team.
There may also be certain unsaid rules or rituals that might come across to you as bizarre or frustrating. Avoid challenging these when you&rsquo;re so new to the company as it might cause tension with your colleagues.
<h2>3.Be proactive</h2>
It&rsquo;s important to learn from others through listening and asking for guidance. Make sure you go out of your way to be helpful, think of solutions to problems and contribute in meetings. Basically, use your initiative and judge whether there is more you can do to develop your work skills and abilities.
Acting in this way will leave a good impression with your manager and show that you can be trusted to work hard and think on your feet. After all, this is the type of behaviour companies need from their employees and if you can show that you&rsquo;re a proactive individual, they should be impressed.
<h2>4.Demonstrate punctuality</h2>
It&rsquo;s clear that being late on your first day is a big no-no, but this applies to your entire probation period as well. And it&rsquo;s not only the beginning of the day that you need to be punctual for, make sure you&rsquo;re on time for meetings and back promptly after lunch has finished.
Being late suggests that you don&rsquo;t care and have poor time management and it will start to frustrate others. So don&rsquo;t give off this impression. If you do come across a situation where you&rsquo;re unavoidably late, make sure you apologise sincerely and promise it won&rsquo;t happen again. Remember that you also need to show that you&rsquo;re reliable so avoid taking any days off sick during your probation.
<h2>5.Organisation is key</h2>
Those who are organised are more likely to stay on top of their workload and should generally be more productive. Good organisation is a key skill that all workers should have so you need to show that you can do this. Showing that you&rsquo;re highly productive and organised will impress your new manager and will prove that you have the ability to handle your new role.
Write a to-do list and keep it up to date, planning out what tasks you will complete and when. A bonus of being organised also means that you&rsquo;re less likely to make careless mistakes through double booking a meeting, forgetting to include a key piece of information on a report or neglecting to do a task.

Your probation period is your time to shine and prove to your new employer that you have the skills and abilities you promised. Therefore, it&rsquo;s essential that you work hard and show off your enthusiasm for working at their company.

5 Key Ways to Impress During Your Probation Period

Back in February this year, I had 2 separate conversations that served up the biggest portion of humble pie that I can remember throughout my&nbsp;career to date. The first was via text message from a colleague who asked if we needed to think about a business lockdown policy should this semi newsworthy virus from China enter our shores. The second was over dinner with one of my closest friends who informed me that he had spent his day shopping for emergency supplies which would be stored away just in case the worst happened. I genuinely thought that both individuals had lost the plot and laughed both in their faces and behind their backs. Fast forward a few weeks and my assessment of their perception and judgement had been replaced by inward panic, reactive instinct and the knowledge that I would never again be so dismissive and cocksure about things I didn&rsquo;t really know or understand. Sorry boys (you know who you are!).
Being caught unaware would never be the position of choice but when thrown into a fight or flight situation as long as the former comes out on top, it can be the most intense educational journey that you can experience from a business perspective. I am sure that each business owner will have their own tale to tell and I should imagine that a recruitment business doesn&rsquo;t necessarily have exclusivity on lessons learnt (but will try and win it!), but nevertheless here are some of ours:

<li>Be grateful for every client that respects what you do and empowers you to provide a service to them. There will always be those that expect everything and give nothing but that&rsquo;s fine. Don&rsquo;t let them get you down, thicken up that skin and focus your efforts on the ones that have given you the opportunity to impress.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Never take business for granted and always ensure that you are providing value for money&hellip;.. difficult in the current economic climate but if you are good at what you do this should always be achievable.</li>
<li>It&rsquo;s impossible to help everybody and yet never will there be so many requests to do so. If you are unable to provide the support someone is looking for, you can communicate this with empathy and respect, appreciating that each individual has their own specific backstory.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Dig deep and lead your team from the front, holding as many hands as possible as you mount each hurdle together.&nbsp;</li>
<li>When it does get quiet, park the panic and despondency and look to make introductions for the future and not just for an adrenalin filled quick win. There&rsquo;s nothing more exciting than identifying a new potential client that you want to partner with and eventually realising that goal no matter how long it takes.</li>
<li>Be so grateful for those employees that chose fight over flight and ensure where possible that you are always in tune with their thinking and state of mind.</li>
<li>Find an outlet for your own emotions. Whilst in a second lockdown the options are few and far between, but for me, a last minute Harry Kane goal always does the trick.</li>
</ul>
News of a vaccine and a potential way out of this nightmare was always likely to lead to a period of reflection. That said, it is likely that we still have many more difficult months ahead of us and multiple mountains to climb.&nbsp;We will do it though and be better for the experience even though there will be a fair few scratches and scars to remind us of a journey that nobody could have predicted&hellip; well other than my two very perceptive friends.

A Lesson Learnt

There is a growing voice of discontent among early career employees for whom remote working doesn&rsquo;t work.
&ldquo;The company I joined has completely changed, it&rsquo;s just not the same place, there&rsquo;s no sense of team and belonging, I need a change&rdquo;
&ldquo;Good news! We would like to offer you the job! And better still you will rarely need to attend the office, it&rsquo;s one of our amazing benefits, how does that sound!?&rdquo;
&ldquo;Errrr lonely, career restricting, not practical and bad for my mental health&rdquo;
&ldquo;You&rsquo;ll be glad to know you can come into the office as much as you like&rdquo;
&ldquo;That&rsquo;s good to hear, how many people are in at any one time?&rdquo;
&ldquo;Difficult to say but I hear there is usually a skeleton of staff, your manager loves working from home as it really fits with their commitments and lifestyle&rdquo;
It&rsquo;s time to Wake Up! Remote working isn&rsquo;t for everyone!
Attracting talent is about meeting people&rsquo;s needs and remote working doesn&rsquo;t meet everyone&rsquo;s needs. Fact.
So why do employers seem to promote remote working as the one fits all, panacea of employee attraction?
There is no doubt that remote working suits a lot of people and has and will continue to be a powerful recruitment and retention tool. But are employers who have taken it to the extreme meeting the needs of future talent who might have a different set of needs to established employees?
Are those setting the remote working policies serving their own needs at the expense of future talent?
During COVID there has been a marked increase in demand for experienced employees that can hit the ground running and require little hand holding.
That talent pool has now run dry. Companies are finding it hard to plug gaps with experienced recruits. Those with their eye on the future are switching their attention to growing and nurturing new talent.
To attract experienced staff, remote working has unquestionably been a powerful attraction tool and many of those that have not adopted it, have simply been left with vacancies and poor retention.&nbsp;
But is remote working as attractive to those at the early stages of their careers who may have less outside of work commitments and are maybe focused on career progression and development?
Can it be argued that pushing remote working too far is NOT INCLUSIVE?
Certainly, an element of remote working is highly attractive and hybrid working is undoubtedly here to stay but consider a graduate still living at the family home or perhaps renting a room in a strange city. It is likely they are not financially dependent and won&rsquo;t have the privilege of a separate home office space and other luxuries such as super-fast broadband that create a productive and sustainable working space. Working two feet their bed five days a week! &nbsp;
Wouldn&rsquo;t some prefer to be working in a bustling office, building friendships, confiding in a colleague over lunch, sharing a work space, getting to know different personalities, growing and developing as a person, wandering over to a colleagues&rsquo; desk to ask a question, watching how different people work, having a structured day, &nbsp;observing what does and doesn&rsquo;t work for others, understanding work politics, learning things on the job from their Manager or Mentor, showing off their talent and socialising at the end of a hard day&rsquo;s work?
The answer seems to be that early-career employee&rsquo;s certainly want and expect an element of hybrid working but we have seen a growing number who want to be in the office at least 2-3 days a week.
Are those companies that have taken remote working to the extreme sleep walking into a future talent pipeline crisis?
Leaders who genuinely care about the younger generation will recognise that their needs differ hugely from their own and will have well thought-out strategies to ensure they don&rsquo;t miss out on that &lsquo;right of development passage&rsquo; that they knew as &lsquo;office life&rsquo; and benefited from hugely&hellip;an adventure that shaped them both professionally and personally.
It&rsquo;s time to Wake up! Remote working isn&rsquo;t for everyone!
